The cybersecurity threats actually hitting small businesses in Melbourne and Pakenham

By CBI Technologies. Published , updated . 4 min read.

An illustrated small office. A monitoring screen on the desk lists device health, and labels show the server is backed up, a computer is patched and the printer has an update due.

Hackers don’t only go after big companies. A 12-person business with no IT manager is often the easier target, and the people running these scams know it.

We’re a local IT support and cyber security team working with businesses across Pakenham and Melbourne’s south east. Most of the breaches we get called in to clean up didn’t involve anything especially clever. They came from a missed update, a clicked link, or a backup nobody had tested. Here’s what’s actually causing damage right now, in order of how often we see it.

Five threats worth taking seriously

Ransomware

Ransomware locks your files and demands payment to unlock them. Recovery often costs thousands even if you pay, and paying is no guarantee you get the data back.

The businesses that bounce back fastest are the ones with backups they’ve actually tested. A backup that exists but has never been restored is just a hope.

Phishing and impersonation scams

Fake invoices, a message that looks like it’s from “the boss,” a login page that’s a near-perfect copy of the real one. These work because they’re built to catch someone mid-task, not someone reading carefully.

One clicked link can hand over a password that opens everything else in the business.

AI-written scam messages

Scam emails used to give themselves away with bad grammar and odd phrasing. AI tools have mostly fixed that. Criminals can now write a personalised, well-spelled email at scale, which means “check for typos” isn’t the safety net it used to be.

Unmanaged remote devices

Laptops, phones and tablets connecting from home, from a cafe, from wherever. If nobody has a central view of those devices, one infected laptop is enough to give an attacker a way into the rest of the network.

Unpatched software

Plenty of break-ins use a known vulnerability in software that should have been patched months earlier. It’s the dullest item on this list, and also the cheapest one to deal with.

What local IT support actually does about this

None of the above gets solved by buying one piece of software. It gets solved by someone keeping an eye on things consistently. That’s most of what we do day to day.

Monitoring and threat detection

We watch your systems around the clock and set up alerts tuned to your setup, so problems get caught before they turn into an outage.

Backups that are actually recoverable

Cloud backups, with regular restore tests, so a ransomware attack costs you a phone call instead of your client database.

On-site and remote support

On-site callouts across our service areas, with remote support when it’s quicker. Many issues get fixed before staff even notice.

Email and network hardening

Spam filtering, secure email configuration, and tightening up the network so there are fewer doors left unlocked.

Five things worth doing this month

You don’t need a security team to make a real dent in your risk. Start here.

  • Turn on multi-factor authentication on email and any system that holds customer data.
  • Patch software on a fixed schedule, not “whenever someone remembers.”
  • Run a phishing test with staff at least twice a year. Most people have never seen a realistic one.
  • Actually restore a backup to confirm it works, not just that it ran.
  • Set a minimum password standard and stop letting people reuse the same one everywhere.

Need someone on-site?

We handle hardware faults, software issues, virus cleanups and network problems at your home or office. Get in touch and we’ll come to you.

Proactive beats reactive, every time

Waiting until something breaks is the most expensive way to run IT. A few hours of setup now (MFA, patch schedules, tested backups, working alerts) is cheaper than a single bad week dealing with a breach.
