-Remote Access & VPN — Setup, Security & Support

Work from anywhere. Keep your network locked down.

Remote work is normal now — but a lot of businesses set it up quickly and never came back to check whether it was actually secure. CBI Technologies sets up remote access and VPN solutions that let your team connect safely, without leaving your network exposed in the process.

Business VPN

Encrypted tunnel between your staff and your office network — wherever they are.

Remote Desktop

Access your work computer from home as if you were sitting in front of it.

Multi-Factor Auth

An extra layer of verification so stolen passwords alone aren’t enough to get in.

Ongoing Monitoring

Access logs and alerts so unusual login activity doesn’t go unnoticed.

Why it matters

Remote access done badly is an open door for attackers.

Most businesses don’t set up remote access with security in mind — they just get it working and move on. As a result, common shortcuts create real risks that are easy to miss until something goes wrong.

Encryption on connections

Without a VPN, data travelling between your staff and your office network can be intercepted on public or home Wi-Fi networks.

Weak or shared passwords

Remote desktop and VPN logins secured by a password alone are a common entry point. One compromised credential and the network is wide open.

Outdated remote access software

Old versions of remote desktop tools have well-documented vulnerabilities. Attackers actively scan for businesses still running them.

Access logging or monitoring

Without logs, there’s no way to know who is connecting, when or from where. Unusual access can go unnoticed for weeks or longer.

Personal devices on work networks

Staff connecting from personal laptops or phones that aren’t managed by IT can introduce malware directly onto your business network.

Overly permissive access

Giving remote workers full network access when they only need specific files or applications is a common mistake. It means a breach goes much further than it needs to.

What we do

Secure remote access, set up properly from the start.

Each of the services below addresses a different part of a secure remote access setup. Together, they give your team reliable access — and give you confidence that your network isn’t exposed.

Business VPN Setup

A properly configured VPN creates an encrypted tunnel between your remote staff and your office network. As a result, all traffic is protected in transit — even on public or home Wi-Fi. We recommend and install business-grade VPN solutions sized to your team, not consumer tools that aren’t built for the job.

Remote Desktop Access

Remote desktop lets staff access their work computer from home as if they were sitting at their desk. When it’s configured correctly — with encryption and access controls in place — it’s reliable and secure. Without those controls, however, it’s one of the most commonly exploited entry points on a business network.

Passwords get stolen. MFA means a stolen password isn’t enough to get in — staff also need to verify their identity through a second method. In addition, MFA is now a baseline requirement for most cyber insurance policies and security frameworks. We configure it across VPN, email and other remote access points.

User Access Controls

Not every staff member needs access to everything on your network. Role-based access controls limit what each user can reach when connected remotely. Consequently, if an account is compromised, the damage is contained rather than giving an attacker free run of your systems.

Access Monitoring & Logging

Knowing who connected, when and from where is the only way to spot something unusual. Access logs are configured and reviewed on an ongoing basis. Moreover, alerts can be set up for suspicious patterns — such as logins from unexpected locations or outside normal hours.

Device Management for Remote Workers

Personal devices connecting to work networks are a risk if they’re unmanaged and unpatched. We help businesses implement basic device policies — ensuring that only devices meeting minimum security requirements can connect. That way, a staff member’s home laptop doesn’t become a gap in your defences.

How it works

We assess first, then
build what actually fits.

The right remote access setup depends on your team size, what systems your staff need to reach and how much flexibility they need day-to-day. For that reason, the process starts with understanding your situation rather than defaulting to a standard package.

01 — Assess

We review your current setup

First, we look at how your team currently connects remotely — what tools are in use, whether MFA is in place and where the obvious gaps are. Based on that, we give you an honest picture of what’s working and what’s not before recommending anything.

02 — Design & Configure

We set up the right solution

VPN, remote desktop, MFA and access controls are configured to suit your team and infrastructure. In addition, user permissions are set up correctly from the start — rather than giving everyone full access and tightening it down later.

03 — Support & Monitor

We keep an eye on things

Once everything’s live, access logging and monitoring is in place so unusual activity doesn’t go unnoticed. Moreover, if a staff member has connection issues or a new device needs setting up, we’re available on-site and remotely to sort it out.

VPN vs Remote Desktop

Not sure which one
you actually need?

Both are legitimate tools. The difference is in what your staff need to do. Many businesses use both — we’ll advise on the right combination for your situation.

Business VPN

Connect securely to your network from anywhere.

A VPN connects a remote device to your office network as if it were physically present. Staff can access shared files, internal systems and printers from home or on the road. It’s the right choice when your team works from their own devices but needs access to office resources.

Remote Desktop

Access your actual work computer from a different location.

Remote desktop gives staff full control of their work computer from home or elsewhere — the same desktop, same applications, same files. It’s useful when software is only installed locally, or when staff need to pick up exactly where they left off. That said, it needs to be locked down properly to be safe.

Why CBI Technologies

Remote access that actually works — and stays secure.

A lot of businesses have remote access that sort of works. Files load slowly, connections drop, or staff use workarounds because the proper setup is too fiddly. CBI Technologies fixes the underlying issues rather than patching around them.

01

Security built in, not bolted on

MFA, encrypted connections and access controls are configured from day one. There’s no going back later to add security after the fact — it’s part of the setup from the start.

02

Sized for small business

Enterprise VPN infrastructure isn’t the right fit for a 5 or 10-person team. Instead, we recommend solutions that are appropriately sized — reliable, maintainable and not unnecessarily complex.

03

Plain English throughout

Remote access involves a lot of technical moving parts. Everything is explained clearly so your team understands what they’re connecting to and what to do when something doesn’t work.

04

On-site & remote support

Some remote access problems need someone on-site to sort out properly. Melbourne’s South-East is our backyard, so a visit is never a problem when it’s needed.

05

Staff setup included

Getting remote access working on a new device or for a new staff member is part of the service. As a result, your team doesn’t need to figure it out themselves when something changes.

06

Trusted by local businesses

CBI Technologies has been supporting businesses across Melbourne’s South-East for years. Our approach is the same every time — straightforward advice and work done properly.

FAQ

Common questions about our services

We already use a free VPN — is that not good enough?

Consumer and free VPN tools are designed for personal use — typically to bypass geo-restrictions or hide browsing activity. They’re not built to provide secure access to a business network. Business VPN solutions are configured to control exactly who can connect, what they can access and from which devices. In addition, they provide the logging and monitoring that consumer tools simply don’t offer.

It can be — but only when it’s configured correctly. Remote desktop exposed directly to the internet without MFA and access controls is one of the most commonly exploited vulnerabilities on business networks. Attackers actively scan for open remote desktop ports. When it’s set up properly — behind a VPN, with MFA enforced and access restricted to authorised users — it’s a legitimate and useful tool.

All staff who connect remotely should use MFA — without exception. One account without it is enough to give an attacker a way in. Beyond remote access, MFA should also be enabled on email and any business application that holds sensitive data. Most platforms support it, and the setup process is straightforward for staff once it’s properly explained.

Personal devices can connect, but they need to meet some basic requirements first — current operating system, up-to-date software and ideally a business-managed security tool. Unmanaged personal devices are one of the most common ways malware ends up on business networks. We can put a basic device policy in place that sets a minimum bar without being unnecessarily restrictive.

A remote access VPN connects individual users — staff working from home, for example — to your office network. A site-to-site VPN, on the other hand, connects two fixed locations permanently — such as a head office and a second premises. Most small businesses need a remote access VPN. However, if you have multiple offices that need to share resources, a site-to-site setup may be more appropriate. We’ll advise on the right configuration during the initial assessment.

On-site support covers Melbourne’s South-East, including Rowville, Knox, Dandenong, Casey, Pakenham, Cranbourne, Clyde North, Berwick, Narre Warren, Warragul, Emerald and the Yarra Ranges. In addition, remote support is available for businesses anywhere in Australia. Call us if you’d like to confirm coverage for your area.
